| Overseas Highway is the 130 mile long ribbon of highway that links the Florida Keys with the mainland, and Keys residents with each other. It is an Unlimited access highway bordered by businesses, homes, bike paths, and the ocean. There are many Bridges on U.S.1, including the famous Seven Mile Bridge just south of Marathon Key. Drive with caution on this Highway. When we say unlimited access it means just that. Cars, bikes, R.V.s, and pedestrians are allowed to cross the highway just about anywhere. |

The Mile Markers are the eqivalent of channel markers planted in the shoulder of the road every mile from the Florida mainland to the mile marker zero in Key West. People locate themselves by specifying the mile marker plus a fraction of the mile. For instance, Point Laura is at "MM 112 and a half". Location is also pinpointed by referring to which side of the highway the place is; i.e., bayside or oceanside. Going South toward Key West on U.S. #1 the Oceanside is on your left, and Bayside is on the right. For example: John Pennekamp State Park is Located at mm 102.5, Oceanside.
It's just that simple. Here is a listing of landmarks and their locations by mile marker:

There
is construction as you enter Key Largo. The road is being widened and there is
a new bridge under construction. Expect delays and observe speed limits.
The Highway Patrol is enforcing the speed limits.
To avoid weekend bottlenecks take Card Sound Road from Florida City instead of US 1. Traffic is heavy Southbound on Fridays and Northbound on Sundays. There have been some serious accidents on the Stretch (U. S. 1) this week so be safe out there!! When you party in the Keys, Always follow the Designated Driver Rule and steer clear of those that don't.
